a chat with the (fashion) hash

Click "read more" for an exclusive interview with Hannah of The (Fashion) Hash!

Let's get this stereotypical question out of the way, why did you start a blog?

I started The(Fashion)Hash one year ago as a platform for my writing and experience working in the fashion industry, an outlet to express my personal style, and as a catalyst for my career. Not only do I consider the content I post to be my (fashion)addictions, but blogging has become a bit of an obsession, itself! I can’t imagine my life without my blog, nor do I want to. It’s been such a positive experience thus far.

Are you originally from the city? Are you in school? If so, what are you studying?

I’m originally from Milwauke, Wisconsin. I moved to New York around 2.5 years ago to attend Fordham College at Lincoln Center – I study visual arts and business. The summer after high school graduation I attended the London College of Fashion, which helped me establish a really important foundation of fashion knowledge. I’ve let my passion take me the rest of the way.

Did you always love fashion? How old were you when you realized this was what you wanted to do with your life?

I have always loved fashion! I give a lot of credit to my parents, who allowed me to let my freak flag fly from a very young age. I’ve always insisted on dressing myself from a wardrobe of thrifted treasures that I “masterfully” destroyed and made anew. I definitely created my own style growing up (it wasn’t necessarily good or even relatively attractive, but it was all mine).

I actually planned on moving to the city to pursue musical theater, but my senior year of high school I decided to pursue my other love in life, fashion, and I’m very happy with my decision.

What are some of your favorite affordable stores to shop at?

For high street shopping, I love Zara, Topshop, Weekday, Madewell, and Ikea for homewares. I’m also big on thrifting, especially in the Midwest! I’ve found some of my most precious pieces in the depths of the $1 bin.

Fashion wise, which season do you prefer?

FALL! I seriously love clothes…so much so that I want to wear as many as possible at any given time. That’s why fall is my favorite – cool enough to rock multiple layers but not so cold that you need to cover your handiwork with something puffy.

What films inspire you? What songs/bands inspire you? Who is your fashion role model?

My boyfriend and I love to watch movies – it’s our go-to date night. Drop Dead Gorgeous, Midnight In Paris, Almost Famous, Marie Antoinette, The Royal Tenenbaums, Factory Girl, and (naturally) Cluless are a few of my favorite films for fashion inspiration.

I tend to discover a song I love and listen to it forever, so my main playlist doesn’t change much. Some of my favorite songs include ANR “It’s Around You”, Lana Del Rey “Kinda Outta Luck”, Zaho “Je Te Promets”, Dolly Parton “Jolene”, CocoRosie “Rainbow Warriors”, Oh Land “Wolf and I”, Metric “Monster Hospital”, and College “A Real Hero (ft. Electric Youth)”.

My role model is any guy or girl who doesn’t take fashion too seriously. I hate seeing people dress like and act like mannequins – stiff and unoriginal. Fashion is all about having a sense of humor. Get down with yo bad self!

Which blogs do you follow?

I follow tons of blogs! Some of my favorites include Stop It Right Now, Hanneli, Le Fashion, Jak&Jil, Into the Gloss, Park & Cube, Studded Hearts, and Because I’m Addicted.

You seem to always find beautiful vintage pieces. Any tips on how to become a better vintage shopper?

Be patient – I know the warehouse size stores can be intimidating, so go pee first and then take time to sift through the merch. If you’re in a rush, browse for interesting fabrics and patterns instead of looking at every single piece. And don’t be discouraged if you don’t find something great every trip; vintage shopping is hit or miss and the thrill of the find is always worth the wait!

Hannah was kind enough to let me interview her. She also has awesome original style and you guys should definitely check her out at
